New Year Brings New Congestion Tolling in NYC
Beginning January 5, 2025, NYC congestion tolling will be implemented by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to reduce the economic and environmental impact of heavy gridlock in the newly designated Congestion Relief Zone.
With hopes to reduce traffic and pollution, these new peak period tolling rates will apply weekdays from 5AM-9PM and weekends from 9AM-9PM. Only established tolls will be collected for the first 60 days, after which additional charges, fees, or fines may apply. The full schedule of Congestion Tolling Rates from MTA shows both standard rates and EZPass transponder rates, indicating a higher cost for non-EZPass vehicles.
Toll Transponders Reduce Costs for Fleets Operating in the Congestion Relief Zone
Ensuring vehicles operating on toll roads are enrolled in toll accounts and have the needed materials for tolling is a fleet best practice in any tolling region. With NYC’s new congestion pricing, it’s even more important to equip vehicles operating in the Congestion Relief Zone with EZPass transponders to reduce spend. Use of an EZPass transponder in the Congestion Relief Zone allows vehicles to obtain the peak pricing. According to the MTA, non-transponder tolling will be billed up to 50% higher for any waiting to receive a paper bill in the mail. For those utilizing our Toll Management solution, your vehicles with properly installed EZPass transponders are covered for the discounted rate.
