Responsible businesses seek to improve the world by looking beyond their mission. Aligned with its mission to improve patient health and wellbeing, an American biotechnology corporation has worked diligently to improve air quality by committing to an all-electric vehicle fleet by 2030.
The “alternative” power to change the world Their first initiative was to electrify their employee commuter buses that take 2,500 of its Bay Area employees to work. The company collaborated with global manufacturer BYD to custom-build its first-ever, fully electric, double-decker motor coaches, complete with rider amenities that include Wi-Fi and 110-volt outlets.
Buses are not the only way the company’s fleet contributes to their environmental sustainability goals. They exclusively offer hybrid or electric vehicles as company fleet vehicle options and, wherever possible, pure electric vehicles are made available to all employees in the field.
Making a measurable difference
The results are coming in and making an impact. The company’s commuter buses eliminate an estimated 1,800 tons (nearly 4 million pounds) of CO2 greenhouse gases each year. Assessment of the first 21 buses, (now grown to 71) indicates their efficiency is equivalent to the planting of more than 83,000 trees—a total that, like those trees, will only keep growing.
